Over MVR 3.8 mln raised in Help Pakistan telethon handed over

Over MVR 3.8 million raised in a 16-hour live telethon to help the people of Pakistan has been handed over. The donation was received by Pakistan's Ambassador to the Maldives, Vice Admiral Arthur Mukhtar, at a ceremony held Saturday.

The telethon was organized by the Pakistan Maldives Friendship Association in collaboration with some local media outlets. Over MVR 2 million was received to the special bank account set up for the telethon, while the remaining funds came from fund boxes set up in Male' and the atolls and through contributions from some businesses.

Over 33 million people have been affected by heavy rains in Pakistan since June this year. More than one-third of Pakistan is still under water due to heavy rains. According to reports, about 1,700 people have been killed so far.

Pakistan's government has repeatedly said it can only overcome the huge losses and damage with the generous assistance of the world.
