Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract for the construction of Faafu Magoodhoo Airport.
The agreement was signed by MTCC's CEO Adam Azim and Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shana Farooq at a ceremony held at the ministry on Wednesday. MTCC was awarded the contract for MVR 231.5 million and given 550 days to complete the airport project.
The scope of the project includes the construction of a 1,500m long and 30m wide runway, the construction of a taxiway, apron, and fire access road, the construction of a passenger terminal building, the construction of a fire station with control tower, installation of security measures (fencing, gates, security checkpoints), supply and installation of navigational equipment, and supply and installation of ground handling equipment.
The government also awarded the contract to MTCC to dredge the land required for the construction of the airport in Magoodhoo earlier this year. The project was awarded to MTCC for MVR 207.9 million on January 27 this year. The company started the dredging work on August 10.
The Planning Ministry announced on December 20 last year that it would seek bids for the development of domestic airports in six islands, including Magoodhoo. The opportunity has since been opened several times, seeking contractors to develop airports on a cross-subsidy basis. Out of the six islands, only the construction of Magoodhoo Airport has been awarded to a party thus far.
