Bodies of fire victims identified: Police

The bodies of the victims of the fire that broke out in M. Nirufehige last Wednesday have been identified, police said.

Ten people died from burns and smoke inhalation in the most tragic fire incident in the Maldives in recent history. Nine bodies were recovered from the burning house while another person died while being treated in hospital.

While the bodies of nine out of the ten victims were identified, the police Sunday said the body of the previously unidentified man who died in the fire has now been identified.

According to the police, three Indian women, a Bangladeshi woman, five Indian men, and a Bangladeshi man died in the fire.

Police are working with the Foreign Ministry and relevant embassies to transport the bodies of the deceased whose families wish to take the bodies back to their country.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. On the day of the fire, the police said the building has a garage on the ground floor while the decked upper floors had small rooms which were considered separate households.
