The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said the Villimale Ferry Terminal would be developed to modern standards.
MTCC's CEO Adam Azim told AVAS that the company is working on a plan to develop the ferry terminal with new facilities. Work will begin as soon as the plan is developed, he said.
"We are conducting studies on the development of the Villimale ferry terminal. Work will start once the planning process is completed," Azim said.
The current Villimale ferry terminal premise is used for various purposes of MTCC in addition to serving as a ferry terminal. A large area has also been provided for parking. However, the land allocated for the ferry terminal is not a parking zone, Azim said.
"The terminal land is not a parking zone at all. We will develop it," Azim said.
In 2016, a contract was signed to rebuild and develop the Villimale ferry terminal. It was decided that a 12-story building would be constructed, and a blueprint was prepared for MVR 500,000. MTCC was paid MVR 17 million as an advance payment for the project. MTCC subsequently vacated the land where the terminal was located and built a temporary terminal, which is still in use. However, with the change of government in 2018, the construction plan was not implemented.
