AFCONS fire: Human bones found at site believed to be of one person

The human remains found during the search for missing AFCONS employee are believed to be of the same person, Maldives Police Service has said.

India's AFCONS company is the developer of the Thila-Male Bridge. A fire broke out at the AFCONS accommodation in Gulhifalhu on the night of December 16, injuring 73 people. A search to locate the missing man was launched after a headcount following the fire failed to tally with the number of employees that resided at the location.

The police said during e search for the missing man, human bones were found on two occasions in the same area. Further investigations are currently underway, they said.

Over 465 employees resided at the accommodation where the fire broke out. Some of them jumped down from the upper floors of the building to escape the fire. Seventy-three people were injured in the incident, out of which thirteen were taken to IGMH for treatment. Sixty people were treated at Tree Top Hospital. Those injured include people with broken arms and legs, and burns.

The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed. AFCONS said the cause of the fire is being investigated and that the company's employees had been moved to safe locations.
