AFCONS employee still missing after fire

An AFCONS employee who went missing during a fire in the company's accommodation in Hulhumale' has still not been found.

The fire occurred at the accommodation late Thursday night. A search to locate the missing man was launched after a headcount following the fire did not tally with the number of employees that resided at the location. The police said efforts to locate the missing man are underway.

India's AFCONS Infrastructure is the contractor for the Thila-Male' Bridge project. While 465 employees resided at the accommodation, some of them jumped down from the upper floors of the building when the fire broke out. Seventy-three people were injured in the incident, out of which thirteen were taken to IGMH for treatment. Sixty people were treated at Tree Top Hospital. Those injured include people with broken arms and legs, and burns.

The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed. AFCONS said the cause of the fire is being investigated and that the company's employees had been moved to safe locations.
