The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has compiled a list of 49 resorts that do not pay overtime to their employees.
TEAM is a private association formed to protect the rights of employees in the tourism sector.
The list includes several top-tier resorts in the country. Some of these resorts are also on Maldives Inland Revenue Authority's tax non-compliers list.
AVAS has learned that the list has now been sent to the Tourism Minister, Dr. Abdulla Maumoon.
According to the Employment Act, overtime work requires employees to be paid at least one-fourth of the employee's hourly wages. If the work was done on a Friday or public holiday, at least two-thirds of the employee's hourly wages must be paid as overtime pay.
Some well-known resorts in the Maldives are known to commit fraud in paying salaries and additional benefits to employees from time to time.
