Peak season: Over 59,700 operational tourist beds

The Tourism Ministry has said the Maldives had 59,771 operational tourist beds at the beginning of this year's peak tourism season.

According to statistics released by the ministry, 1,203 tourist facilities were operating as of December 20.

The ministry said 41,081 beds are currently being used for tourism in 168 resorts. While 861 guesthouses have 14,140 beds, 2,918 beds are available on 158 safari vessels. A further 1,616 beds are available in tourist hotels and 16 in three homestay facilities.

The number of tourists visiting the Maldives this year crossed 1.6 million earlier this week.

The largest percentage of tourists visiting the Maldives this year are from India, with Indian tourists accounting for 14.5 percent of the total arrivals. The second largest number of tourists came from Russia, accounting for 12 percent of tourists. The UK was the third largest source market.
