The government spent MVR 136 million on pensions in December.
According to the Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO), more than MVR 136 million was paid to 29,542 people as pensions in December. This is the figure for the total amount issued as pensions under four categories. These include retirement pensions, basic pensions for people over the age of 65, state benefits for retirees from public employment, and other state retirement benefits.
The largest amount was paid as basic pension for people over 65 years of age, with payouts adding up to MVR 97 million. MPAO said 20,594 people received payments in this category.
More than MVR 8 million was paid to 1,646 people as retirement pensions. A total of 4,495 were paid MRV 24 million as retirement benefits. Additionally, more than MVR 5 million was paid to 2,807 people as other retirement pensions.
All pensions except retirement pensions are paid from the state budget.
