President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to provide flats and land to the people of Male' City without excluding anyone.
The president, who is contesting the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 's presidential primary, met with Male' MPs and campaign teams at the Dharubaaruge on Tuesday night.
Speaking at the meeting, the president said the construction of 7,000 flats for the residents of Male' city was underway. He said work was also underway to allocate 5,000 plots of land to Male' residents and that the plots would be issued to its recipients within the year.
The president acknowledged the dire need for housing in Male' city. He said his pledges regarding housing would not be a tool to gain votes for himself.
"I will not link this to vote. By mid-year, I will issue land for Male' city residents as promised," he said.
The president also assured Male' residents that he would fulfill his promise of housing so that no eligible person would be left out, after evaluating the applications for the plots and flats in a transparent manner.
The president added that there are currently more housing projects underway than during any other administration. Currently, the construction of about 16,000 flats and houses is underway in various stages in different parts of the Maldives, he said.
The president first announced the allocation of 5,000 plots of land in the opening session of Parliament last year. The president said 1,000 plots in Hulhumale', 2,000 plots in Gulhifalhu, and 2,000 plots in Giravaarufalhu would be issued to Male' residents during his term.
