Virgin Atlantic Airlines is set to launch flights to the Maldives this year.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) 's General Manager Hassan Areef told AVAS that Virgin Atlantic is preparing to start flights to the Maldives when the winter season ends. The flights are scheduled to start in October, although the airline has yet to announce a specific date, he said. The flights will be operated from Heathrow Airport to Velana International Airport (VIA).
"Virgin Airlines is expected to start flying when the winter season ends, during the summer," Areef said.
Billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Airlines had been in talks with previous governments to launch flights to the Maldives. The airline officially announced its intention to launch flights to the Maldives in November last year. The airline will use Boeing 787 aircraft on these flights.
