Current gov't has not caused difficulties to conduct business: Qasim

The second largest party in the ruling coalition, the Jumhooree Party's leader Qasim Ibrahim has said that, unlike previous governments, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government has given him the opportunity to operate his business in peace.

Speaking at a party council meeting held at JP's main headquarters at M. Kunooaz, Qasim said there was no government that had not made things difficult for business since he started his business in 1984. However, President Solih's government does not cause such difficulties, he said.

Qasim said previous governments damaged his business and seized property as a result of his efforts for reform. He noted that he was imprisoned and tortured several times.

The business mogul said he was more interested in the best interest of the country and its people rather than dwelling in power. Although he was treated unjustly due to his efforts for reform, positive changes have come to this country as a result of his efforts, he said. There will be people who have benefited from various businesses he conducts, he said.

Although his business has not been harmed by the current government, enough discussions have not taken place between himself and President Solih regarding government affairs in his capacity as the leader of JP, said Qasim. Although JP is part of the ruling coalition, JP has not been given enough government positions as agreed by President Solih, he said. However, he always relays to the President his views on matters relating to the government, he said.

The JD will decide on its course of action in the upcoming presidential election after the party's national congress this month.

The upcoming presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9. President Solih, who has attained the main-ruling MDP's presidential ticket, is working to form a major coalition with political parties to contest a second term.
