Waste Transfer Station to open in July

The construction of WAMCO's Waste Transfer Station in the Male' industrial area has been completed and will be ready for use in July this year.

Environment Minister Aiminath Shauna and WAMCO's Managing Director Yousuf Siraj briefed reporters after giving a worksite tour on Wednesday morning.

The site will have a three-story waste collection building, and a building housing the Waste Department of the Environment Ministry, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and WAMCO Office. are being constructed here. Both buildings are currently undergoing the final finishing works.

Minister Shauna told reporters that most of the work of the waste transfer station has already been completed. However, some facilities still need to be established before it is ready for use.

"We are hoping to use this place by July of this year at the latest," she said.

WAMCO's Managing Director Yousuf Siraj said with the new building, waste transported to containers to Thilafushi would be packed in containers. Therefore, this would resolve the issue of garbage falling into the sea during the transportation process, he said.

China's State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) is constructing the waste transfer stations in Male', Hulhumale' and Villimale'. The projects were handed over to CSCEC on June 24 last year. CSCEC is responsible for constructing the buildings and procuring and installing the equipment needed for the stations.

Waste collected from Male', Hulhumale' and Villimale' will be taken to the transfer stations, where they will be sorted.
