Survey shows Pres Solih likely to take the lead in September election

The Maldives-based think tank, the Baani Center for International Policy, has conducted a survey showing that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is likely to win the upcoming presidential election.

The Maldives' presidential election is scheduled for September 9 this year.

According to Baani Centre, 384 people participated in the survey conducted by Baani Center in all regions of the Maldives. The survey results showed that 18 percent of respondents said they would vote for President Solih, while 13 percent of the respondents said they would vote for jailed opposition leader and PPM President Abdullah Yameen. Four percent of respondents said they would vote for Parliament Speaker and MDP President Mohamed Nasheed.

Forty-three percent of respondents have not yet decided who they will vote for, while 15 percent said they will not vote in the election.

The survey, conducted by telephone, said those who have not decided to vote for a particular candidate will make decisions once the candidates contesting the presidential election are confirmed.

According to Baani Center, the survey results would not change by more than five percent even if the survey is conducted several times.
