The Regional Airports Company announced a successful test flight to Kulhudhuffushi Airport after the installation of new lights at the airport.
The construction of Kulhudhuffushi Airport was initiated by former President Abdulla Yameen as a presidential promise, and the airport was completed during his tenure. Although a test flight landed at the airport during his time, scheduled flights only began operating in August 2019, after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office. Night flights have not been operated to the airport in the past three years.
According to a statement issued by the Regional Airports Company, a test night flight landed at Kulhufudhuffushi Airport on Thursday, following the installation of a night flight system at the airport.
The installation of a night flight system at Kulhudhuffushi Airport is significant for the city's parliamentarians, mayor, and residents, who have long been calling for night flights to the airport. The addition of night flights means that the airport can now offer round-the-clock service, which will be a tremendous help for emergency patient transport and various business operators.
Kulhudhuffushi Airport joins three other airports operated by Regional Airports Company that offer night flights - Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Faresmathoda Airport, and Fuvahmulah Airport.
