Afshan appointed as Spokesperson for new political party

Former Local Government Authority (LGA) CEO Afshan Latheef has been appointed as the Spokesperson of the new political party being formed by Fikuregge Dhirun, the breakaway faction of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Afshan was appointed as the CEO of the LGA on June 9, 2020. She resigned from the post last Thursday, at the cusp of great internal division within MDP. Afshan, who has previously served as the MDP Secretary General, said she resigned to give time to her family and personal affairs.

Afshan's resignation came while her husband, Hussain Amr, was sacked from the post of the Managing Director of the State Trading Organization (STO) earlier this month. Both Afshan and her husband supported MDP's President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed, in the MDP presidential primary and are close allies of Nasheed. Nasheed leads the anti-government movement within MDP.
