Those seeking power wish to capitalize on this gov't's success: Pres Solih

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said some individuals and parties who wish to contest the upcoming presidential election want to take advantage of the development brought about to the country by the current government. The President made the remark while speaking to the people of Faafu Nilandhoo during his ongoing visit to the island.

Speaking at the session, President Solih questioned why those aspiring for power did not put effort into developing the country through the opportunities they got during the previous government. He said they saw the progress made by the current government and are seeking to capitalize on the achievements.

The President further noted that upon assuming office, he gave top priority to reducing the need for the people in the atolls to travel to the city for various purposes and to provide access to basic services in the islands. While the first term of his government is coming to an end, many basic and essential services have been established in the atolls, he said.

“With the establishment of services, big changes will be seen [in the islands],” he said.

The President said that when he came to power, peace, and security had been lost in the Maldives. He emphasized that he made it his goal to restore peace to the country despite political differences and noted that significant progress had been made in this regard.

The President said that the Maldivian people should be able to live together in unity and expressed his confidence that peace will prevail in the country by the end of the first term of government.
