Nilandhoo MP signs up for main-ruling MDP

Nilandhoo MP Abdul Muhsin Hameed (J4) has joined the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

MP Muhsin, who was elected to the Parliament as an independent candidate, signed up for MDP at a special ceremony held at Nilandhoo island during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's ongoing visit to Faafu atoll. His membership form was received by President Solih at the ceremony attended by MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mohamed Aslam, some MPs, and cabinet ministers.

Nilandhoo is traditionally known as a stronghold of the main opposition PPM. However, during Saturday's ceremony, several Nilandhoo residents also signed up for the MDP.

The MDP enjoyed a supermajority of 67 members until the recent exodus of 13 of its MPs, reducing the party's strength to 54. Muhsin's move to MDP adds another seat to their representation, bringing the tally to 55 MPs supporting the party.
