Over 2,500 new members join main-ruling MDP

Over 2,500 new members have signed up for the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The membership forms were received by the party's Chairperson and Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, at a ceremony held at the party office on Wednesday.

According to Fayyaz, the forms represent new members through a party-organized activity conducted last month, spanning 12 constituencies.

Fayyaz referred to the mass dismissal of several of the party's members ahead of its presidential primary, as they did not meet the requirements outlined in the Political Act. He said the party aims to rebuild its membership to pre-deletion levels. Furthermore, he affirmed the party's commitment to expanding its membership even further during the upcoming presidential campaign.

The party recently experienced the departure of 12 of its MPs and their supporters, who have formed a new political party.
