'The Democrats' to hold inaugural congress on Wednesday

The inaugural congress of "The Democrats" will be held on Wednesday night.

A group of members who support Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed split from the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and filed a petition with the Election Commission on May 21 to form The Democrats. The Democrats submitted 3,560 forms to the Election Commission on June 1 to register the party.

The Elections Commission officially informed on Sunday that it has approved holding the inaugural meeting required to form The Democrats. Following the decision, the meeting has been scheduled to be held at Ghiyasuddin School in Male' at 2030hrs.

The party's founder Maafannu West MP Hassan Latheef, said the party's constitution, name, logo, and emblem would be deliberated and approved at the inaugural congress.

Nasheed has confirmed that he will be attending the inaugural meeting.
