Imran attributes overcoming of 2004 tsunami damage in Kolhufushi to Pres Solih

Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said the people of Meemu Kolhufushi have finally been able to overcome the damages caused by the devastating 2004 tsunami during this administration.

As part of his re-election campaign, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is currently touring several islands of Meemu Atoll.

Speaking at a rally held at Kolhufushi, the minister, who hails from the island, said the people are aware of the developments since the 2004 tsunami. He said the post-tsunami efforts of the-then government took off only after the first MDP government assumed power in 2008.

"After nearly 20 years, the people have witnessed tangible results from the efforts made during this term," Imran expressed.

Imran said the people of Kolhufushi would now feel that they have finally been able to overcome the tsunami, crediting President Solih for transformation. Imran said the people had pleaded with previous governments to find a solution to prevent approximately one-third of the island from breaking off as a result of the tsunami.

"No one saw it; not one president or minister listened..," Imran said.

However, Imran said, the people of Kolhufushi were satisfied with the successful protection of the island's shores in less than four years since President Solih assumed power.
