The Election Commission (EC) has announced that six seats will be added to the next Parliament.

There are 87 members in the current 19th Parliament. If six more seats are added in the next parliament, the total number MPs would increase to 93 members.

The constituencies that will have additional seats are as follows:

Two seats for Male' City
One seat for Addu City
One seat for Kaafu Atoll
One seat for Baa Atoll
One seat for Gaafu Alifu Atoll

Currently, Male' City is represented by 15 members, while Addu City has seven members. Baa, Kaafu, and Gaafu Alif Atolls each have three members.

The Election Commission (EC)'s Vice President Ismail Habeeb said changes to the parliamentary constituencies for the 2024 elections, as per Article 8(g) of the Constituency Determination Act, were approved on Tuesday. Habeeb also mentioned that the commission will soon release details of the total registered population figures for each administrative district.

As per the Constitution, one member of Parliament is to be elected for every 5,000 people. Therefore, as the population increases, the number of members also increases accordingly. Some MPs have proposed amendments to the Constitution to limit the number of members, but these proposed amendments have been rejected by the parliament so far.
