The PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said that the incumbent government has undersold many lagoons in the Maldives.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Noonu Velidhoo on Thursday, Dr. Muizzu expressed concerns about lagoons and islands being leased without clear purposes. He pledged to bring back such areas under government control within legal bounds, with plans to develop these assets for the nation's benefit. Dr. Muizzu pointed out the presence of a similar lagoon in the Noonu atoll and promised to safeguard it while undertaking a dredging project to establish an airport there.
Dr. Muizzu acknowledged public dissatisfaction with the slow pace of government projects. He said his biggest satisfaction was that he was receiving invitations to visit all islands across Maldives for his campaign. However, he noted that due to time constraints, it is not feasible to physically visit all islands, but he assured that all citizens are equal in his eyes.
"I may not be able to go to all the islands. However, I will meet with the island councilors and discuss the concerns," Muizzu said.
Muizzu said many islands have requested to address housing challenges. He committed to effectively addressing the issue by facilitating home construction and building flats. He also laid out plans to enhance the Male' City surf point "Raalhugandu," transform it into a profitable hub, establish sports facilities nationwide, and upgrade harbors. He also committed to reducing the number of foreign workers and boosting local employment through training initiatives.
Muizzu said he would pass a relevant law for travel agencies and allow foreign travel agents to register and operate in the Maldives. Additionally, he mentioned an upcoming online platform to streamline the selling of fishing products. He committed to introducing a new bail law, although specific details were not provided.
Acknowledging that the drug problem is a major problem facing the Maldives today, Muizzu said his government will establish quality rehabilitation centers in different parts of the country to address the challenge. He also promised to enhance the independence of the judiciary and improve court standards.
Highlighting specific pledges for Velidhoo, Muizzu said Velidhoo has the potential for a revolutionary transformation. He said he would develop modern roads in Velidhoo, build a resort in the island's lagoon, and increase employment opportunities for the youth. Recognizing the crucial need for waste management on the island, he said he would establish a waste management system away from the island's residential area.
