Macchangolhi South MP Ahmed Haitham has departed from the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ahead of the second round of the presidential election.
Haitham was actively involved in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's first-round reelection campaign, particularly in door-to-door efforts.
In a letter addressed to MDP's Chairman, Fayyaz Ismail, Haitham said he decided to leave the MDP as he did not get the support from the party to pursue initiatives he envisioned for the people. Therefore, there is no point in remaining in a party that doesn't align with his principles and goals, he said.
Earlier in August, MDP's Fonadhoo Constituency MP, Moosa Siraj, also left the MDP. He signed up for the main opposition, PPM, on September 22.
