Vice-Pres Elect contested election under PNC banner, Speaker confirms

Vice-President Elect and Fares Mathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef contested the presidential election as a member of the Peoples' Nationa Congress (PNC), Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said.

At Tuesday's Parliament sitting, Nasheed said Hussian Mohamed Latheef had left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and joined its sister party, PNC, ahead of the presidential election. The relevant documents had been submitted to the Parliament, he said.

Nasheed said the documents had also been submitted to the Parliament by the Elections Commission.

With this change, the Parliament's composition now includes 56 MPs from the main-ruling MDP, 13 from The Democrats, four from the PPM, four from the PNC, three from the MNP, two from the MDA, two from the JP, and three independent members.
