Social media activist Shumba arrested

Social media activist Ahmed Ashraf, known as Shumba Gong, has been taken into custody.

Police said he was arrested at 10:05 pm on Tuesday night in connection with a physical altercation. Police said they are further investigating the incident.

Ashraf is a council member of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s political party, Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD).

An MTD official said Ashraf was not involved in instigating the altercation but had been present at the scene as a social media activist to document and report on the events as they unfolded.

Ashraf will be produced in court today for a decision on his remand.
