PPM-PNC to offer allowance to encourage increased female representation in Parliament

The Progressive Congress Coalition will provide a special allowance to women elected to the Parliament to increase female representation in the Parliament.

The PPM-PNC has announced that it will contest all the constituencies in the parliamentary election. There are no female members of the PPM-PNC in the current session of the Parliament.

In a post on X today, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said he would like as many women as possible to participate and secure seats in the parliamentary elections under the PPM-PNC banner. He called on the coalition to ensure women contest and secure at least 20 percent of seats.

“To encourage this, I will try to arrange for every female MP elected from the PPM to be given a special allowance by the party in addition to the salary and allowance received from the parliament,” Muizzu said.

During the presidential election campaign, Dr. Muizzu said laws, regulations, and government policies would be amended to empower women under his leadership.

The Election Commission expects to conduct the parliamentary elections in March or April next year. Members will be elected for 93 constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
