MDP and Adhaalath explore collaboration for upcoming elections

The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Adhaalath Party have discussed collaborating for upcoming elections.

The two major elections up ahead are the by-election for the Male' City Mayor and the parliamentary election. The mayoral election is scheduled for January 13, 2024, while discussions are currently underway to hold the Parliamentary elections before Ramadan.

In a brief statement issued on Tuesday night, the MDP said it had decided to hold further meetings with Adhaalath to identify ways in which the two parties could work together in the upcoming elections.

In the last parliamentary election, MDP and Adhaalath discussed working together but MDP ultimately chose to contest all parliamentary seats independently. Adhaalath did not secure any seats in that election.

The Adhaalath Party has been working with the MDP since 2015. The party also worked with the MDP as a coalition partner in the 2018 government until the end of its term and in the 2023 presidential election.
