MDP accuses gov't of ties to gangs, condemns attack on PG

The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said senior officials face attacks due to the administration's purported friendly links with criminal gangs. The MDP made the allegation in a statement condemning the attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem today.

In the statement, MDP condemned the attack on Prosecutor General Shameem and accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration of negligence in providing adequate protection and security to individuals carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

The statement further said while the previous government prioritized the security and protection of Members of Parliament, and reduced fighting in the Maldives, aggression has increased since the new government took over administration in November. It also noted that government officials are being ruthlessly attacked as President Dr. Muizzu's administration maintains close ties to local gangs and provides them with protection.

MDP called for increased protection and security for the state officials, and for Shameem's attackers to be brought to justice. The party called on President Dr. Muizzu and his government to cease protecting criminal groups in the Maldives.
