A motion has been filed in the Parliament calling for the expedited handover of 4,000 flats under the former government's 'Gedhoruveriyaa' housing scheme. The motion was moved by Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla at Wednesday's Parliament sitting.
More than 7,400 complaints were submitted after the Planning Ministry publicized the list of eligible recipients under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme during the previous government. In response, the ACC ordered a halt to the allocation until the complaints were thoroughly addressed and resolved. Although the Planning Ministry attempted to proceed with the flat allocation after addressing the complaints, the ACC intervened in November last year, halting the handover during a lottery ceremony conducted by the previous government. At a Monday press conference on the flats issue, the ACC said their investigation found that of 4,048 application forms, 59.6 percent of the applications- about 2,400- did not meet the eligibility criteria.
Presenting the motion on Wednesday, MP Eva said the housing issue in the Maldives remains unresolved. The release of the permanent list of 4,000 recipients under the government's housing scheme had given hope to thousands of families to live a beautiful and simple life, she said, stressing that the delayed allocation burdens rightful owners with continued rent expenses.
The motion, passed unanimously by 24 members, urges the government to promptly deliver flats to eligible beneficiaries and address the hardships faced by families awaiting housing.
