MDP candidates pledge loyalty ahead of parliamentary election

The candidates contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections on the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket have vowed not to switch parties after being elected to parliament. The candidates affirmed their commitment to the party at a rally held at Artificial Beach on Monday night to officially launch the MDP campaign for the parliamentary election.

The candidates who contested the 19th PArliamentary elections on the MDP ticket had also vowed not to switch their allegiance. However, some members changed parties after being elected on the MDP ticket. This includes former President Mohamed Nasheed and 13 members loyal to Nasheed who left the party to form a new party, The Democrats. In addition, 13 MDP members joined the ruling PNC in December last year.
