Parliament reaffirms postponement of Parliamentary Elections to after Ramadan

The Parliament on Wednesday reiterated its decision to delay the upcoming parliamentary elections until after Ramadan.

The Election Commission had earlier scheduled the election for March 17, coinciding with the month of Ramadan. Following concerns, the parliament on February 11 passed an amendment to the General Elections Act to postpone the parliamentary elections to 10 days after the end of the month of Ramadan. However, President Dr. MOhamed Muizzu did not ratify the amendment and asked parliamentarians to reconsider the matter.

Fuvahmulah MP Hussain Mohamed Didi proposed reapproving the motion in its original form despite the president's request. The motion was passed with 47 votes in its favour. The amendment now awaits gazetting, having been passed by Parliament for the second time. Subsequently, the Election Commission will be required to announce a new election date.

Members will be elected in 93 constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
