Three appointments have been made to the Housing Committee established to advise the Housing Ministry regarding the flats and land plots issued by the former government.
During the previous administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, applications were opened for 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme. Over 13,000 people applied for the flats.
However, more than 7,400 complaints were submitted after the Planning Ministry publicized the list of eligible recipients under the scheme during the previous government. In response, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) intervened, ordering a suspension of the allocation until all complaints were thoroughly addressed.
Although the Planning Ministry attempted to proceed with the flat allocation after addressing the complaints, the ACC intervened once again in November last year, halting the handover during a lottery ceremony conducted by the previous government. Subsequent investigations by the ACC revealed that nearly 60 percent of the applications did not meet the eligibility criteria. ACC has since instructed to hand over flats and lands to recipients verified as eligible. It was decided that the verification would be carried out with the advise of a special committee formed to oversee the process.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu formed the ad-hoc committee on February 14, comprising five members: Aminath Aneesa, Aminath Eenas, Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, Ahmed Ali Manik, and Mariyam Fizana Rasheed. However, Aminath Aneesa, the committee's Chair and former minister, resigned from her position on February 24 due to medical reasons.
The newly appointed members of the committee are former minister Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, Fathmath Saeed, and Aminath Shaira. Aminath Eenas serves as the committee's Chair, while Abdul Azeez Yoosuf is the Vice Chair.
