Maldives sees decline in crime rates, reports police

Maldives Police Service has reported a significant decrease in crime rates across the country.

In a post on X, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan shared statistics on the decline in crime rates.

According to police, robbery was the most reported crime in December, with 777 cases. However, from May 1 to 16 this year, the number of reported theft cases dropped to 356. Between January 1 and May 16, a total of 2,952 theft cases were recorded.

Assault was the second most reported crime in December, with 117 cases. This figure has also seen a decrease, with only 62 assault cases reported from May 1 to 16 this year.

Meanwhile, the number of snatching incidents has similarly declined, from 117 cases in December to 38 cases reported from May 1 to 16 this year. Kidnapping cases have also seen a significant reduction, with five cases reported in December last year compared to just one case from May 1 to 16 this year.

Maldives Police Service expressed their commitment to maintaining the downward trend in crime rates.
