Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has acknowledged that the Maldives is experiencing a temporary economic crisis but emphasized that various international leaders are providing support to help the country navigate these challenges.
Minister Zameer Saturday said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts to stabilize the country's economic situation have been well-received by international leaders. He stated that international leaders believe the Maldives' situation is temporary and the crisis will be short-lived.
Recently, three Maldivian cabinet ministers, including Zameer, visited China at the invitation of the Chinese Foreign Minister. Zameer disclosed that during the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed a message assuring that the Maldives' economic difficulties are temporary and pledged technical assistance to help overcome them.
Zameer highlighted that support from other countries is not necessarily limited to financial aid, but also includes adjustments in loan repayment schedules. He said the Maldives continues to receive assistance and technical advice from leaders of various countries to solve the economic difficulties.
The minister said of the Maldives' outstanding debts, $50 million owed to neighboring India has already been deferred. India, as per its neighborhood first policy, is also providing extensive advice, guidance, and assistance to overcome the economic crisis, he said.
The minister emphasized that the President intends to expand the fiscal economy and solve the debt problem and economic problems. Friendly nations are assured that the Maldives' economic situation will improve significantly if President Dr. Muizzu continues his economic agenda to overcome the economic crisis. He added that friendly nations have assured the Maldives of their continued support during this challenging period.
