Corruption case filed against MRDC MD

A corruption case worth MVR 10 million has been filed against the Managing Director of the Maldives Road Corporation (MRDC). The Anti Corruption Commission of Maldives (ACC) has sent the case files to the Prosecutor General's office, and has requested that a court case be filed against MD Ibrahim Nazeem.

The ACC's case against Nazeem states that he had taken undue advantage of an agreement between MRDC and Raise Crown Productions to supply 5000 tonnes of cement. The investigation that ACC conducted revealed that MD Nazeem had signed the agreement.

The ACC has revealed that according to the agreement, the money had to be paid after the supplying of the cement. The agreement did not have any clause that stated that MRDC had to pay any money in advance. However, records show that money was released before the supply. The money was released without the knowledge of the board members, and furthermore violated the terms of the agreement. Records show that more than Mvr 10 million was released to "finance" this project.

The ACC requested that MD Nazeem be charged with taking undue advantage of his position in the company, and used the money in a way that was beneficial to certain people.

The ACC has also requested that the money owed to MRDC be paid as the company faces a significant loss as the due date for payment had passed. The cement had been supplied 169 days after the date that had been specified in the agreement. The ACC has stated that MRDC faces a loss of Mvr one million as the cement was supplied a number of days after the specified date. Furthermore, the ACC revealed that the money released in advanced also contributed to the loss of MRDC.
