United Opposition announces Jameel as leader

Maldives United Opposition movement has been announced with former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as it’s leader.

The ceremony was held in London today. Former President Nasheed who is under asylum from the British government, announced the United Opposition today. As Dr.Jameel was announced as the leader for the United Opposition Movement, former President Nasheed has let go of the differences that was preventing the opposition leaders from uniting. Former President Nasheed said that with Jameel as a new leader, all differences were being cast aside to work for a democratic Maldives.

Nasheed also said that this coalition is nothing like the previous coalitions, and this was a stronger coalition. In his speech, gnashed highlighted that corruption and chaos had taken over the country, and freedom of speech was diminishing day by day.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Jameel said that democracy was established in 2008, and that Maldives had remained a democratic until President Yameen was elected. Dr. Jameel also said that the people were independent and free during Nasheed’s presidency, and Dr Waheed’s presidency leading unto Yameen Abdul Qayoom’s victory.

Jameel accused President Yameen of spreading chaos and corruption within the community and of eliminating his opponents through unconstitutional political dramas. Jameel also said that President Yameen had committed acts violating human rights, and also acting outside of the constitution.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jameel said that even though Maldives was paradise for tourists, it was not a paradise to the locals. Jameel also said that President Yaameen’s “authoritarian presidency” was also a threat to the stability of the Indian ocean and South Asian region.
