- May imports rose by 32 percent
- Exports increased by six percent
- Bridge materials accounts for 18 percent of imports
Statistics published by Maldives Customs Service has shown that the imports for the month of May this year compared to the same period last year had increased by 32 percent.
Last year May, the imports were valued at MVR 2.5 billion. The amount had risen to MVR 3.3 billion this year. Much of the increase is attributed to the increase in imports of the bridge construction materials. This amounts to 18 percent of the imports.
Earnings from import duties for Customs had also increased by 15 percent compared to the same period last year. Last year May, Customs earned MVR 187.4 million as imports. This May the Customs earned MVR 162.6 million.
Exports for the same period had also increased by six percent. Last month, the figure was at MVR 393.5 million.
