MNU, Environment signs MOU for green building concept modules

Ministry of Environment and Energy and Maldives National University (MNU) has signed an MoU to integrate and deliver Green Building Concepts particularly Energy Efficiency modules in training programs of the University.

Speaking in the signing ceremony, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said MoU will assist in reducing the energy consumed in the building sector and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Under the MoU, the Ministry will provide a grant of MVR 1.3 million to introduce and teach the subject to University students.

The activities of the MoU is supported by “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” project, which is implemented by Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) assisted by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and financed by Government of Maldives and Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency in the building sector, increasing energy efficiency in the building sector by developing appropriate policies, guidelines and standards.

Minister Thoriq said the modules of the Bachelors Degree in Architecture program will be changed to reflect the MoU. He added that the Ministry will provide assistance in developing a Masters program in Architecture including the green building concepts.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said that this MoU will assist in reducing the energy consumed in the building sector and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The building sector is among the highest energy guzzlers globally.

Statistics show that on average, 30 percent of green house gases and 40 percent of energy produced were from the building sector; this high figure is also applicable to the Maldives.
