Ahmed Tholal has resigned from his position as Secretary General of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). His resignation comes amid the start of a reform agenda announced by former President and PPM President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, after claiming that corruption had taken root in the Party and that democratic values of the Party had deteriorated.
Speaking to Avas, Tholal said he had resigned as he did not believe that he could remain in the position given the current direction taken by the Party. He said that he did not believe that he could remain as SG in name alone.
"I have offered my resignation and have informed Party President of my decision. Will send my official resignation letter in the morning," he said. "Party is in turmoil, even I'm not in the know of key issues, when my mandate as as SG has certain responsibilities. So me remaining just as a figurehead is not something I can accept, hence I've offered my resignation."
Tholal was appointed as SG with the unanimous vote of the Council on April 8, 2014. The Party laws state that an SG can be appointed to the position with the unanimous vote of the Party Council.
