Thirty-five former journalists at Haveeru has appealed the Civil Court verdict which had banned them from working in any other media outlet for a two-year period. The appeal was filed in High Court and Supreme Court.
Lawyer Husnu Suood representing the 35 journalists now working in "Mihaaru" confirmed the appeal had been filed and that both Courts had accepted the case for review.
"Mihaaru" Chief Editor Ismail Naseer said the appeal, filed on behalf of the 35 journalists, had requested to nullify the Civil Court verdict.
The Civil Court verdict issued on Sunday said based on the Islamic fiqh concept of lessening damages, any Haveeru employee working in another media for a two-year period was illegal and if such a case was submitted by majority shareholders to either Home Ministry or Broadcasting Commission, the case had to be reviewed within a period of seven days.
However, Attorney General Mohamed Anil and Broadcom had stated that based on the Constitution and laws, no action can be taken on the issue.
