Land reclamation for new runway begins

  • 60 acres of land to be reclaimed
  • Traffic flow manageable after opening
  • US$ 800 million project to develop airport

The project to reclaim 60 hectares of land required for Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) has been launched today.

The project was launched by President Abdullah Yameen this morning. MACL Managing Director Adil Moosa said that 60 hectares of land will be cleared for the project. He said the biggest challenge to the project was to conduct the project while simultaneously running operations of the airport.

China's Beijing Urban Construction Group has been tasked with the project to construct a 3400 meter long runway. With a width of 65 meters, the runway once completed will be able to cater to the largest flights. The current runway will be transformed to a runway taxiway. Once completed the airport will cater to 7.2 million travelers per year.

A state of the art fuel farm will also be created in the reclaimed area.

The US$ 800 million project to develop the airport is currently ongoing, with a new terminal and runway. The terminal is developed by Saudi Arabia's Bin Laden Group.
