Commonwealth envoy arrives in Maldives

The newly appointed Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General Dr. Willy Mutunga has arrived in the Maldives on a five day visit. This is the first time he came to the country following his appointment to the position.

He was welcomed at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) today by Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ibrahim Shaheeb. Foreign Ministry reported that Dr. Mutunga was in the Maldives on invitation by the Government. No additional details have been made public regarding his visit.

Dr Mutunga “will consult with all relevant stakeholders to encourage the strengthening of a pluralist, multi-party democracy, steps towards credible and inclusive presidential elections in 2018 and the advancement of reforms to give full effect to the separation of powers,” according to a statement by Commonwealth.

Dr. Mutunga was appointed as Special Envoy by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland - an appointment made at the request of the Maldivian government.
