Civil Court issues injunction on Maumoon's orders

Civil Court a while ago released an injunction against Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, ordering not to follow Maumoon's orders on holding Party Council and Committee meetings.

The case in Civil Court was filed after some members of the Party had alleged that PPM President and former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom had suspended all Party operations and formed a Council against the Party laws. The case had also requested an order to suspend all activities carried out against the Party laws and to hold the Party meetings as mandated.

The case was filed by Hulhudhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Shahid and Naifaru Constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam. Civil Court had initially rejected the case on Monday but the case was refiled yesterday and reviewed as such. The case was first rejected on Monday as lawyers for the two MPs had failed to show up in Court.

While the case was filed in Civil Court, President Maumoon had instructed not to hold any Councils and departed on an unofficial visit on Sunday. He said that Council sessions will go ahead under his direct supervision only and that no sessions can be held while he is out of town.

The Civil Court injunction said that any and all orders issued by President Maumoon on holding meetings and sessions of the Party until the Civil Court reaches a decision on the lawsuit. The injunction is applicable to PPM President, PPM Council, Party branches and other involved parties.
