Maldives govt aids effort to find mother, child held 'captive' in Bangladesh

Maldives government Sunday said efforts are underway to find the mother and child held captive in Bangladesh.

According to reports the young Maldivian and her child have been held captive in Bangladesh by her husband.

Foreign ministry in a statement said the Maldives High Commission in Dhaka was leading the effort to find the two.

The ministry had also met with the woman's family to offer advise on a way to bring them back to the country, the statement read.

Sources say the young woman had fled to Bangladesh without the knowledge of her family to be with her lover who is reportedly the father of the child.

Reports say the woman has since married the Bangladeshi national.

The man had reportedly held the woman and the child 'captive' after she tried to return to the Maldives with help of her family.

The two had met while the man was working in Maldives but was later deported on a drugs charge.
