The most prestigious of the awards given out in the worldwide tourism community, the World Travel Awards, saw the Maldives take home three awards home, the award for best snorkeling destination, the world's best spa award and the award for the best beaches.

At the ceremony held in Sun Siyam Irufushi Resort, the award for the most popular water villa resort went to the Sun Aqua Vilureef, and the most popular airport hotel award went to the winners of the previous years award, the Hulhule Island Hotel.

The most popular private island was given to the Coco Island Resort, and the world's best underwater restaurant award went to the Anantara Kihavah's under water restaurant. The most romantic award went to the previous winners as well, Baros Maldives Resort.

The individual award, the World Tourism Pioneer Award went to Ahmed Siyam Mohamed (Sun Travel Siyam).

This year's travel awards were held excluding many figures from the tourism industry, the reason being the sudden change of venue by the award's organizers, creating difficulties for the transportation of the invitees. The 23 year old award is known as the Oscar's of the tourism field.
