Former Barcelona captain and Spanish international football star, Carlos Puyol has arrived in the Maldives to be the special guest in the final of the Siyam Mauroof Soccer Cup being held in N. Atoll.
Puyol is the second Barcelona captain and Spanish footballer to arrive for such an occasion in the Maldives, after former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez.
Xavi was the player who stepped up as the skipper to fill the position after Puyol retired from football. Puyol was the main pillar in defence during the era where Barcelona had played the famous Tiki Taka football, and Puyol had played a major role in winning six major trophies for Barcelona in the year 2009.
Puyol was also instrumental to the Spanish international sides defence in the 2008 Euro and 2010 World Cup, both of which the Spanish international team went on to win.
The Football Association of Maldives had previously planned to make Puyol the special guest in the Maldives Football Award, however the awards have now been delayed to the upcoming year.
