The Best Athlete of the year awards have gone to top sprinters, Hassan Saaid and Afaa Ismail.
These two athletes had shined in the athletics tournaments held throughout the year before winning their awards at the Athletics Association's first Athletics Award night.
Saaid was also given a prestige award for being the first athlete to bring home a gold medal. The gold medal won by Said in last year's Indian Ocean Island Games is the first gold medal brought home by a Maldivian athlete from an international multi sports event.
Saeed also won silver medals in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints in this year's South Asian Games, and won another gold medal in the Indian Grand Prix.
Saeed has also won first place in the preliminaries for the Olympic Games.
Afaa had been part of the team that renewed the 100x4 meter relay at the South Asian Games. She also renewed the Maldivian record for the 200 meter event at the Rio Olympics.
