President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's re-election campaign Friday kicked off under a special initiative by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim at the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

The colourful ceremony held in the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area Hulhumale were attended by hundreds of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the presence of cabinet ministers, government lawmakers and top state officials.

Top government parliamentarians and ministers who addressed the gathering had heaped praise on the efforts of the First Lady.

PPM parliamentary group leader and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said Fathimath Ibrahim has set an example for future first ladies.

The ceremony also saw over 250 new members join the ruling party.

The First Lady led initiative does not reflect the official PPM efforts for president Yameen's re-election, her office had said earlier.
