Trial begins for driver over woman's death

Prosecutors on Wednesday accused the driver of the car that hit and killed a woman in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale last year of being reckless.

Fathimath Shiuna, 28 of Raa Atoll Rasgatheemu island died while being treated at the state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male.

The accident occurred when the speeding car driven by 22 year old Ahmed Maldan Ali crashed into a motorbike where Shiuna was the passenger.

During the first hearing of the trial on Wednesday, prosecutors blamed Maldan of being reckless which resulted in the death of the woman.

The judge presiding over the trial had rejected a plea for leniency by the defendant to remand him until the end of the trial.

The 35 year old man riding the bike had also suffered serious injuries but has since recovered.

If found guilty, Maldan faces up to four years in prison.
